Is Online Betting Legal in Portugal?

Yes, online betting has been legal in Portgual since 2015 after many years of existing as a grey market. Online and landbased gambling is regulated by the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ). Unfortunately the site is not available fully available in English. However, the SRIJ does maintain a convenient list of all legal betting sites in Portugal, though it doesn’t offer a clean comparison of each brand like you find here on ListOfAllBookmakers.com.

If you’re interested in learning more about the SRIJ and other European gambling regulators, check out our page on iGaming regulations in Europe.

What Is Portugal’s Best Betting Site?

The best betting site really does depend on the user and what they’re looking to bet on – for example if you are only looking to bet on Liga Portugal, we would need to take that into account when giving you a recommendation. Another important distinction is if you value a bookie with an English website, or if you’re fine using a Portuguese version. That being said, of course some are better than others. We have ranked every bookmaker on several important criteria and here is what we think:

Betano is the best betting site available to Portuguese players. They have a huge welcome package, competitive odds, sharp apps and desktop website, a huge variety of markets and leagues, interesting promos, great customer support, and an English website and app. If you’d like to know more information including a welcome offer breakdown, company details, and overall what to expect from Betano in 2026, have a read of our Betano Portugal review.

Does Portugal Have A National Self-Exclusion Register?

Yes, player protections in Portugal got a significant upgrade in April 2026, when the SRIJ launched a centralised online self-exclusion portal. The service lets you block your own access to every licensed betting and casino site in the country in one go. The process was previously handled site by site, which clearly isn’t an optimal setup for at-risk players.

The registration process is simple: you (or a third party acting on your behalf) submit a single request through the SRIJ portal, and the exclusion applies across all licensed operators at once.

If gambling ever stops being fun, you can set up your self-exclusion directly at the SRIJ self-exclusion portal or read more on the SRIJ responsible gaming page.
