Play Alberta was the first, and currently only online sportsbook and casino licensed by Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC). The brand launched in 2020 with hopes to reclaim market share in a province dominated by offshore bookmakers, none of which pay taxes to the Alberta government. The brand’s done well to become the most recognized online bookmaker in Alberta thanks to key sponsorships of local teams, most notably being exclusive betting partners of the Edmonton Oilers & Elks, along with the Calgary Flames & Stampeders. With local partnerships and AGLC licensing, it’s easily the safest option in 2026. Sadly, they’re not the best option.
Play Alberta performs extremely well for betting on local sports. Odds are competitive, the SGP tool is quality, and odds boost promos provide genuine value. But, outside of betting, the product is flat out bad. This review will examine the key strengths and weaknesses of Play Alberta and provide a few alternatives that we’d rather play with.
The real strength of Play Alberta’s sportsbook is the localization. There’s excellent coverage on sports that Albertans like to bet on the most, and even some unique local features, such as a section dedicated to betting suggestions from the Jason Gregor Show. Odds boost markets provide genuine value, and there’s usually at least one boosted market on a marquee matchup every day.
Another growing strength from Play Alberta is their SGP tool, which is impressively advanced for NHL and NBA bets. We tested their NBA SGP against 13 other Canadian sportsbooks and Play Alberta had one of the best results, allowing combinations on 24 different events. For comparison, bet365 also offers 24 events, Sports Interaction has 21, and BET99 has 17. There were even a few unique markets on offer such as team totals on turnovers & blocks, along with player points & assists by quarter. These aren’t available at most books.
While localization is a highlight, Play Alberta’s weaknesses show the other side of the coin – this book isn’t suited for betting on most international events. Across the board there’s far less selection than Canada’s most popular offshore betting sites like bet365 or Coolbet. The eSports offering is basic, covering only a handful of games with limited markets. Soccer betting is just alright – there’s a good selection of leagues, but missing important markets like Asian totals and Asian handicaps. Those looking to bet on the World Cup this summer are better off elsewhere.
Play Alberta performs best when it comes to the most popular sports to bet on in North America. Hockey, basketball, baseball, football (American/Canadian), and soccer get the best coverage with international competitions, and decent markets on major leagues like the NHL and NBA. In total there are 39 sports categories available at Play Alberta which cover traditional sports, eSports, and virtual events:
The major omissions are racing markets on horses, trotting, and greyhounds. These markets are often more difficult for bookmakers to integrate, but are always present on top international betting sites. If a site has a quality racing section, it’s usually a good sign that they offer a competitive sportsbook.
Outside of sports betting, the offer at Play Alberta is pretty grim. While the casino does offer slots, live games, and a few unique titles with Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers themes, the core product is pretty bad. And when comparing to other modern online casinos like Stake or BC.Game, the product doesn’t even come close.
The casino is limited to 10 providers – for reference, BC.Game has over 40. The industry’s major game providers are completely absent. There are no games from Hacksaw, Pragmatic Play, NoLimit City, or Play’n GO. There’s also no crash games, so don’t expect titles like Plinko, Chicken Cross, or Mines.
The live casino is significantly better, but the selection is very limited. You’ve got live blackjack, poker, roulette, baccarat, and game shows, but that’s basically it. Only one provider, and max hands are capped at $1,000. Once again, it just doesn’t come close to competing with modern platforms.
Play Alberta is the right call if you’re an Albertan who bets primarily on local sports. The AGLC licence gives you real consumer protection that offshore sites simply can’t match, and the sportsbook delivers where it counts – NHL odds, SGP depth, and local team partnerships that no competitor can replicate in this province. That’s a legitimate advantage.
The problem is that Play Alberta stops there. The casino is years behind the competition, the international sports offering is thin, and there’s no racing to speak of. If you’re a serious bettor who wants variety, better odds on global markets, or a modern casino experience, you’re better served by one of the alternatives listed below. Play Alberta earns its place as a secondary book for Albertans, not a primary one.
With Alberta still open to offshore sportsbooks, there’s an abundance of alternatives out there. Most of them are crap. Here are a few of our favourite alternatives, and while they may not offer as valuable of a welcome bonus, the gaming experience here is top notch. All of our recommendations are fully licensed, either by a local or international regulator, support convenient payment methods, offer quick payouts, and of course offer high odds on key sports. Click read review on any of the books for a more in-depth overview.

The best feature of Play Alberta might just be their welcome bonus. You can claim up to $200 in free bets by depositing only $20, here’s how the offer breaks down:
This is one of the few offers in Alberta that I consider a must-claim. It’s good value, fair terms, and the quality of Play Alberta’s sportsbook might surprise you – especially for hockey and basketball bets.

Yes, Play Alberta offers apps for both iOS and Android devices.
Yes, and it's one of the most comprehensive SGP tools I've reviewed. In testing against 13 Canadian sportsbooks, Play Alberta matched bet365 by allowing combinations across 24 different NBA events. They even had a few unique markets that are hard to come by, such as team totals on turnovers and blocks.
The casino section is limited to around 10 game providers, with no titles from major suppliers like Pragmatic Play, Hacksaw, and NoLimit City. There are no crash games, and the live casino is capped at a single provider with $1,000 max hands.
